In our culture today, self-development is so important. Personal branding is one of the most essential tools one can have. As you know, we are a brand that is ''information for the culture''. What's better than having an individual who has the sauce in entrepreneurship, public speaking, self-development, and an awesome business professor? With that being said, I'd like to introduce our guest; she is an educator, speaker, and entrepreneur. The one and only Mary Dittman, or better known as Professor Dittman. Professor Dittman teaches at Francis Marion University and has a dedicated website to empower women to become the best version of themselves. Today, I sat down with Professor Dittman to ask her about the power of marketing in today's ever-changing society, the growing number of women entering entrepreneurship, and a motivational quote.
1. What do you think small businesses and entrepreneurs should be focused on when it comes to marketing themselves and building their brand?
Professor Dittman: Decide on a specific target audience and tailor your product and message to that audience. Having a clear focus is crucial to making your message resonate in the crowded communication spaces we have today. Focus on the customer, their specific needs, problems, or pain points that you can solve, and then keep it simple! Offering 15 different things confuses your message: pick one lane and stay in it.
How can more women get into entrepreneurship in today's market?
Professor Dittman: Anybody can become an entrepreneur today. There are a lot of resources available: everything from the Small Business Administration (SBA) to the Florence Chamber of Commerce (shoutout to Les Nichols, who runs the small business division), to the Donald E. Kelley Small Business Institute at Francis Marion University. There are so many free resources available. Also, AI can be very helpful in identifying your target customer, their needs, and how you can meet those needs.
As an educator & speaker, what is that one quote or phrase you use to motivate yourself and others?
Professor Dittman- I do love a motivational quote! Here are some of my current favorites:
"I always finish what I start."
"If you want to change your life, change the way you think."
"If you want different results, you have to do something different."
